🌸 Female reproductive system: inositol, DIM and vitex for cycle disorders and PMS
How to support hormonal balance
The female reproductive system is sensitive to hormonal balance: estrogens, progesterone and prolactin. Cycle disorders, PMS and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are common reasons for support. Three substances are especially popular: inositol, DIM and vitex. Let's look at their mechanisms.
Hormonal balance
The menstrual cycle is regulated by a complex interaction of hormones from the hypothalamus, pituitary and ovaries. Imbalance can show as irregular cycles, PMS and fertility problems. For more on male reproductive support — see "Male reproductive system".
Inositol
Inositol is a substance similar to vitamin B8 that participates in cell signaling. Two forms are especially important for women's health: myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol. More — in "Inositol: myo and D-chiro".
- Supports insulin sensitivity.
- Studied in PCOS.
- Participates in ovarian function.
DIM
DIM (diindolylmethane) is a compound formed when indole-3-carbinol from cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower) is digested. DIM is studied as a modulator of estrogen metabolism.
- Supports healthy estrogen metabolism.
- Used in estrogen-dominant conditions.
- Source — cruciferous vegetables.
DIM helps balance the ratio of beneficial and less beneficial estrogen metabolites, which matters for hormonal health.
Vitex
Vitex (Vitex agnus-castus) is a plant traditionally used to support the female cycle. It is studied for PMS and cycle disorders related to prolactin.
- Affects prolactin.
- Used for PMS.
- Supports cycle regularity.
When to use
Inositol
Supports insulin sensitivity and ovarian function.
DIM
Modulates estrogen metabolism.
Vitex
Supports the cycle and reduces PMS symptoms.
Doctor
With serious cycle disorders, a gynecologist consultation is required.
Remember: these supplements support but do not replace medical treatment. With cycle disorders, infertility and endocrine disease, diagnosis and medical supervision are needed.
What is inositol and why for women?
Inositol participates in cell signaling and is studied in PCOS and cycle disorders.
How is myo different from D-chiro?
Two forms of inositol, often used together in a ratio of about 40:1.
What is DIM?
Diindolylmethane from cruciferous vegetables, modulating estrogen metabolism.
What is vitex?
A plant used for PMS and cycle disorders, affects prolactin.
Does inositol help PCOS?
Research shows support of insulin sensitivity and ovarian function in PCOS.
What is the inositol dose?
Studies use 2–4 g a day, often in a myo:D-chiro ratio of 40:1.
Is vitex safe?
Usually well tolerated, but it affects hormones, so it is better to agree with a doctor.
Where is DIM found?
DIM forms from indole-3-carbinol in broccoli, cauliflower and other cruciferous vegetables.
Can these supplements be taken together?
They are often combined, but with hormonal disease it is better as prescribed by a doctor.
When to see a gynecologist?
With persistent cycle disorders, infertility and endocrine symptoms — be sure.
