🔥 Nicotinic acid: benefits and flushing

Nicotinic acid is the classic form of niacin. At doses of 50–100 mg and above it causes a "flush": reddening of the skin, itching and warmth. This happens due to the release of prostaglandins and is a harmless, though uncomfortable, reaction.

  • Lowers triglycerides and raises "good" cholesterol (HDL).
  • Flushing is a normal reaction that passes within 20–60 minutes.
  • High doses (1–2 g/day) are used to correct the lipid profile.
  • May raise uric acid and blood sugar with long-term use.
Caution: long-term nicotinic acid above 2 g/day requires medical supervision due to the risk of hepatotoxicity and hyperglycaemia.

🧂 Niacinamide: the no-flush form

Niacinamide is the amide form of niacin. It does not cause flushing and is often used in cosmetics and supplements for the skin. Niacinamide is also a precursor of NAD+ but does not affect the lipid profile as strongly as nicotinic acid.

  • Does not cause flushing even at high doses.
  • Supports skin health (against acne and pigmentation).
  • Used in skin research and anti-ageing products.
  • Found in most B-vitamin formulas.
Note: niacinamide does not lower cholesterol as effectively as nicotinic acid, but is great for daily vitamin support without side effects.

⚗️ Inositol hexanicotinate: "safe" niacin

Inositol hexanicotinate is a sixfold esterified form: six molecules of nicotinic acid bound to inositol. It is considered a "sustained-release" form — niacin is released slowly, reducing the risk of flushing and allowing higher doses.

Niacin is found in many foods. Important: in grains niacin may be bound in a poorly absorbable form (niacytin), so absorption from plant sources is lower than from animal sources. Tryptophan in protein also partly converts to niacin.
