Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant. Its main job is to protect cell membranes from damage by free radicals and products of lipid peroxidation. It works together with other parts of the antioxidant network — selenium, vitamin C and glutathione.

Biological activity of the forms differs. Alpha-tocopherol activity is the reference: when a label says "vitamin E", it is usually α-tocopherol or its synthetic analogue (all-rac). Gamma-tocopherol, which dominates in vegetable oils, is especially effective at neutralizing nitrosative stress — the damaging effect of nitric oxide.

Did you know: most supplements contain only alpha-tocopherol. But research shows that high isolated intake of α-tocopherol can lower gamma-tocopherol levels in the blood — which is why the benefit of a "full mix" of tocopherols and tocotrienols is increasingly discussed.

Vitamin E was discovered by accident, while studying how fats affect animal reproduction.

Herbert Evans and Katherine Bishop

Scientists at the University of California found that rats fed a diet lacking certain fat-soluble factors developed reproductive problems. Thus the "fertility factor" — future vitamin E — was discovered.

Isolation of tocopherol

Evans and colleagues isolated the substance from wheat germ oil and named it "tocopherol" — from the Greek "tocos" (offspring) and "pherein" (to carry).

Chemical structure

The structure was established, and vitamin E began to be widely studied as an antioxidant.

Later, tocotrienols were also discovered — they differ by three double bonds in the side chain and are found mainly in palm oil, rice bran and annatto.

Vitamin E protects low-density lipoproteins (LDL) from oxidation — one of the early steps in atherosclerosis. Tocotrienols, in turn, are studied as agents that affect cholesterol and vessel elasticity.

Skin and healing

The fat-soluble antioxidant integrates into skin cell membranes, protecting them from ultraviolet light. Tocotrienols participate in restoring the skin barrier and reducing signs of aging.

Immunity and nervous system

Tip: vitamin E is fat-soluble and absorbs better with fatty food. The simplest practical rule is a handful of almonds or sunflower seeds a day, plus cold-pressed oils in salads. Vitamin E partly degrades when frying, so prefer oils in salads rather than for deep frying.

Toxicity. Unlike water-soluble vitamins, vitamin E accumulates in fat tissue. Long-term intake of very high doses (over 1000 mg/day) may increase the risk of bleeding and suppress vitamin K. So you should not uncontrollably take large doses of isolated tocopherol.

Monthly supply in practice: if you take 100 IU (~67 mg) a day, a month is about 2000 mg — a standard bottle of supplement lasts for several months. But in most cases it is enough to get vitamin E from food.
