Every year, the cells of our body accumulate damage. Some of them neither die nor divide but "linger" in an intermediate state — these are aging, or senescent, cells. They are called "zombie cells" because they are functionally "dead" but continue to release harmful substances.

What is cellular senescence
Senescence is a state in which a cell stops dividing but remains alive. This is a protective mechanism against uncontrolled division (cancer). However, with age such cells accumulate and begin to harm.
Why they are called 'zombie cells'
Senescent cells do not perform their functions, but neither do they die. Moreover, they actively release pro-inflammatory substances — the so-called SASP (Senescence-Associated Secretory Phenotype).

Large randomized studies of senolytics for widespread use are still ahead.

Most senolytics are not approved as "anti-aging agents". Human data are early.
